Colaco Asked To Choose Between Club And Country
Panaji: Club versus country will take an all new meaning when the All India Football Federation (AIFF) asks interim coach Armando Colaco to choose between returning to Dempo Sports Club or continuing for at least a year with the Indian football team.
For years it has been the players who are perennially caught between their club and country, but Colaco will now face the same conundrum when he meets AIFF general secretary Kushal Das early next week.
“I need to know what is in Colaco’s mind before placing the matter in front of the executive committee,” Das told TOI on Thursday.
Colaco—on leave from Dempo Sports Club for four months—has already completed three months in office and is now set for a contract extension. He has won only one of the six friendlies the team has played under his tutelage, but on the evidence of the memorable triumph against Qatar in Doha, and spirited performances against UAE, the federation is convinced that the Dempo Sports Club chief coach deserves an extended shot with the national team.
The question, however, is how long is long enough?
“I need at least five years with the national team. There is so much to do and I don’t think anyone can expect miracles overnight. For the last three months, I have proved that Indian coaches are equal to the challenge but to take the national team to the next level, I need much more time,” explained Colaco.
The AIFF has never handed any coach a five-year contract and, at best, they could reward Colaco with a two-year contract, something the interim coach may not necessarily be either comfortable or happy with.
