Lee Enters Quarters With Hesh, Semis With Vesnina
The seasoned Indian Express pairing of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, seeded fourth in the men’s doubles draw of the US Open, beat India’s Somdev Devvarman and Treat Conrad Huey of the Philippines 6-4, 7-5 to move into the quarterfinals.
Lee and Hesh, as they’re known on the Tour, came through in 92 minutes against a combine, who did well to get this far in the tournament.
Next up for the fourth seeds are the sixth-seeded Polish duo of Marcin Matkowski and Mariuz Frystenberg. If Paes and Bhupathi pull off the quarterfinal engagement they could run into last year’s finalists in New York India’s Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan’s Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi, who have a relatively easier last eight clash against the unseeded British combine of Ross Hutchins and Colin Fleming. Seventh-seeds in the mixed-doubles Paes and Russia’s Elena Vesnina moved into the semifinals, beating Olga Govortsova of Belarus and Poland’s Marcin Matkowski 6-2, 6-4.
In the last four stage, Paes and Vesnina play the American twosome Melanie Oudin and Jack Sock in a late night match on Tuesday. In the other semifinals, Argentina’s Giesela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank, seeded eighth, play the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak.
