Successful Father – Daughter in Bollywood

In Bollywood it’s not just the sons who have followed the dynastic traditions, daughters have done it too. From Rajshree Shantaram to the Kapoor sisters Karisma and Kareena to Twinkle Khanna and Pooja Bhatt, daughters of Bollywood big-wigs have made the best of their Kismat Konnection to make it to the marquee!

  • V Shantaram – Rajashree Shantaram:

    The Late V Shantaram, one of the greatest filmmakers of the early years, has to his credit several path breaking films like Toofan Aur Diya, Doctor Kotnis Ki Amar Kahaani, Do Ankhen Barah Haath and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje. He launched his daughter Rajshree as a heroine opposite debutant Jeetendra in his Geet Gaya Patharon Ne. Rajshree became one of the most popular heroines of the ‘60s who acted in films like Brahmachari, Dil Ne Pukara, Janwar and Gunahon Ka Devta.

  • Gemini Ganesan – Rekha:

    Rekha, one of the longest reigning stars of Bollywood and a style icon, comes from a filmy family from the South. She is the daughter of late Gemini Ganesan, one of the greatest romantic heroes of Tamil cinema of the ‘50s, ‘60s and the ‘70s. He used to be called kadal mannen (king of romance) in those days. Rekha made her debut in Sawan Badhon in 1969.

  • Randhir Kapoor – Karishma, Kareena:

    For years no girl from the Raj Kapoor family was allowed to enter films. Both Babita and Neetu Singh had to quit films after their marriage to Kapoor scions Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor respectively. However, the two daredevil daughters of Randhir Kapoor, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor, not only dared to break the tradition by entering films but went on to become top-rung actresses .

  • Hari Shivdasani-Babita:

    Babita, who became a sought-after star after her golden jubilee hit Farz, in the mid-‘60s, was a daughter of character actor Hari Shivdasani, who was a part of Bollywood for 50 long years, from Dharma Ki Devi in 1935 to Achha Bura in 1983. Babita like her famous aunt Sadhana, was known as a style icon of her time. She did several big banner films like Raaz, Pehchan, Kal Aaj Aur Kal and Ek Hasina Do Diwane.

  • Ravi Tandon – Raveena Tandon:

    Raveena Tandon, who had a successful innings as a heroine in the ‘90s, came from a film family too. Her father, Ravi Tandon, was a leading filmmaker of the ‘70s, who directed Amitabh Bachchan in films like Majboor and Khuddar. Raveena won the National Award for Best Actress (2001) for her performance in Kalpana Lazmi’s Daman.

  • Kaifi Azmi-Shabana Azmi:

    Shabana Azmi, one of the all time great actresses, is the daughter of late Kaifi Azmi, one of the greatest poet-lyricists of his time. He wrote such immortal songs as ‘Waqt ne kiya kya haseen situm..’ (Kaagaz Ke Phool) and ‘Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho’ (Arth). Shabana Azmi, who made her debut in Shyam Benegal’s Ankur, has acted in more than a hundred films and won five National Awards.

  • Dharamendra-Esha Deol:

    Dharamendra has been one of the most enduring stars of Bollywood. He had been among the top three heroes of the ‘70s and ‘80s, but was not very keen on his daughter Esha Deol getting into films. However, the ‘he man’ couldn’t bend his daughter’s strong resolve. Esha, after a slow start, made her mark in the Yash Raj blockbuster Dhoom. She is slowly but steadily making her presence felt in Bollywood.

  • Rajesh Khanna – Twinkle Khanna:

    Rajesh Khanna’s claim to fame was instant. With the phenomenal success Shakti Samant’s Aradhana followed by several blockbusters, he became Bollywood’s first real Superstar. Though neither of his daughters, Twinkle and Rinké, could achieve the same kind of success in their careers as actors, Twinkle Khanna was among the sought after actors of the ‘90s. She was teamed with all the leading stars of the era like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda, and Aamir Khan.

  • Mahesh Bhatt-Pooja Bhatt:

    Ace filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt is credited with discovering or re-discovering several talented actors. His fondest discovery must be his own daughter Pooja Bhatt, whom he launched in Daddy in a challenging role opposite Anupam Kher. Pooja did her daddy proud by winning the Most Promising Newcomer of the Year Award for her performance in Daddy. She acted in several successful films like Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Sadak, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee and Zakhm, before deciding to follow in her father’s footsteps as a producer-director.

  • Anil Kapoor- Sonam Kapoor:

    Anil Kapoor is also famous actor of his time and her daughter Sonam Kapoor who made her debut in film Saawariya in 2007 and nominated in filmfare as Best Female Debut Award. Anil Kapoor has given so many hits at his time like Masaal, Taal, Pukar, No Entry, Welcome, Slumdog Millionaire.
