Make The Right Choice For Hairs
Haircare, like skincare, is subject to a number of myths and plenty of ‘friendly advice’. How many times has a well meaning friend told you about some wonder routine which has had less than desired effects on you. As most experts warn, there is no ‘one method suits all’ type of hair care routine. You have to do what’s best for your hair, of course under the guidance of your stylists. And if you’ve been questioning some of the experts advice, we tell you why you may just be doing more harm than good for your hair.
Oiling hair:
Your grandmother may have told you that coconut oil is the secret behind her thick, dark and flowing tresses. We, however, know how impractical it is to oil and wash hair on a daily basis. Also, anything done in excess can do more harm than good. “Oiling hair once a fortnight is more than enough,” says celebrity stylist Coleen Khan. One of the most common mistakes, she says, is that people oil the strands of hair rather than the roots. “It’s the scalp that must be oiled. Also, you don’t need to keep the oil on overnight. Two hours between oiling and washing the hair is more than enough,” she explains. Another very important point, according to celebrity stylist Savio Pereira is that it is not enough to just apply the oil. “Massaging the oil into the scalp is more important. When you massage, you stimulate the blood vessels, and this is the whole point of an oil massage as it promotes healthy and strong hair growth,” he says. Coleen adds that it is perfectly fine to massage the scalp without oiling, too. “Just work your fingertips on your scalp gently for a few minutes before you wash your hair and see the wonders,” she says.
Shampooing hair too often:
If your question is how often is too often, we have the answer. Twice a week is more than enough. But what about those who tend to sweat a lot? Says international hair expert Jamal Hammadi, “You can just rinse out your hair with water. This will wash out everyday dirt and grime. But if it’s the whole drill – shampoo and conditioner – twice a week will suffice. This will wash away the oils that tend to accumulate and make the hair look sticky.” He warns that the natural oils secreted by the scalp are actually good for the hair and should not be washed out everyday.
Using special shampoo for coloured hair:
There is a reason why they have special shampoos for coloured hair. And yes, though they may be a tad on the expensive side, we got an expert to tell you why using a regular shampoo on coloured hair is the worst thing you can do. “When hair is coloured, it’s PH level goes up quite high. Your regular shampoo also ups it thus drying the hair out and making it look rough, dull and unnourished. Colour special shampoos work to bring the PH to more normal levels thus resulting is healthy and shiny hair,” says Sudeep Grover, hair expert at a leading hair and makeup range.
Using olive oil: “Let’s restrict olive oil to the kitchen and not make it a part of daily hair care routine,” Jamal says. Why? “Olive is dense and the hair does not absorb it. Thus it does nothing to nourish the hair,” he explains. So guess it’s good old coconut oil or almond oil that’s much more suited for a good head massage.
Completely washing out conditioner:
You’ve been told, apply the conditioner to the strands, keep for a minute or two and then rinse out completely. But Savio has a different take. He says one should let a bit of the conditioner remain. He explains this saying, “The conditioner works to maintain the softness and gloss of hair. How will it work if you wash it out completely? You need to wash out the conditioner from you hair till it feels clean and soft and not squeaky clean.”
